The Expedition gathered at their home base of Halfhill to celebrate the birth of a new Ar’nareth with a joyous night of friends and feasting. Though mother and baby could not be present due to complications at the birth, it did not stop Lady Amal’thea Ar’nareth and her husband, Viktos Nightshade, from representing their house with honor. The Lazy Turnip Inn turned out their best plum wine casks, servants carried platters of delicious snacks, and gifts were presented in honor of the newborn. Truly, it was a night to be remembered.
Until the screaming started.
The good times came to an abrupt end when the denizens of Halfhill erupted into screams of terror and despair. Unbeknownst to the Expedition, over the past few months, their home has become plagued by a sleeping sickness, from which the ill eventually fall into a sleep that they cannot wake from, suffering from night terrors of which there is no relief. As more people became ill, the townsfolk began to shutter their doors, hoping in vain to stem the tide. But how can one stem a tide that is invited into your own home through the very food you eat and the drink you consume? This was the question posed by the Expedition as some of their own began to exhibit symptoms of the sickness.
The terror came to a head when one such afflicted, a trader by the name of Zheng Freshhide, came barging into the gathering, rambling incoherently about things that could not be seen. Merada followed closely behind, trying to care for a patient who was not long for this world. When he became violent and struck Merada with a rock, Kiri and Dorant attempted to restrain him and put him into a drug-induced sleep. Unfortunately, the man they tried to save was already dead by the time he reached the ground, screaming and spasming in his death throes, the blood a mix of red and black which leaked from every pore, the only evidence that he was alive at all.
As the gravity of the danger sets in, a difficult question yet remains-
